City of Dresden imposes "Visitors tax" ... 03.02.2014 - 17:17

How high is visitor’s tax and when must it be paid?

Visitor’s tax amounts to 1.30 euro per person for every day of your visit.

Your days of arrival and departure will be charged as one day. Your place of accommodation will collect visitor’s tax on the last day of your stay, or at the latest, within 30 consecutive days thereafter.

Who has to pay visitor’s tax?

In principle, all visitors to the city who stay overnight in Dresden are liable to pay visitor’s tax. Only private overnight stays with relatives or overnight stays at hospitals and n
ursing facilities are exempt. Children are also exempt from the tax until they reach the age of majority. For guests who stay in the same accommodation for longer than 30 days, visitor’
s tax is no longer charged from the 31st day

Important: Please bear in mind that the owner of your accommodation is obliged to collect visitor’s tax from you. If you feel that you have been wrongfully charged by your host, please pay the visitor’s tax regardless and make a claim for reimbursement to the Steuer-und Stadtkassenamt [tax collector’s and city treasuries office] of the state capital of Dresden.

What about if I am staying in Dresden for professional reasons?

Dresden is also a popular location for meetings, congresses and advanced training courses, not least due to its diverse cultural and leisure activites. Usually the organisers’ programmes therefore allow enough time to take a look around Dresden and visit the museums or theatre.
The city therefore also imposes visitor’s tax if your visit to Dresden is for professional reasons. If the programme of your client or employer unfortunately does not allow you any free time to visit the city’s cultural facilities during your time here in Dresden, for larger meetings, the hotel hosting you has possibly already arranged with us that, as an exception,
no visitor’s tax is to be paid. Failing this, you can indepentently apply for the reimbursement of any visitor’s tax paid afterwards upon submission of corresponding evidence, such as the
programme of your client or employer, to the Steuer- und Stadtkassenamt [tax collector’s and city treasuries office] of the state capital of Dresden.
